Am event for World Hearing Voices Day was held in the city of Cairns, Far North Queensland, Australia in 2006. Cairns is a city of only 120,000 people, so this was possibly the smallest city in the world hosting WHVD in its inaugural year. The event was held at the Mental Health Resource Service, a non-government mental health support service that was predominantly staffed by people with lived experience of mental health issues. To celebrate the day, the workshop "Hearing Voices that are Distressing" was held, with 14 mental health clinical and support staff participating. Following the workshop, a lunch to celebrate the Day was held and a DVD recording of the UK film "Voices in our heads" was shown to an appreciative audience of voice hearers and non-voice hearers. We sent details of what we had done to "Intervoice" way back in 2006, but nothing ever got reported about our efforts on this website, so I'm making up for lost time now. It sure didn't encourage us much to do anything again, neither did it make us feel part of any "bigger picture" out there. I guess the lesson for me has been - never trust anyone who tells you they will support you, unless they back it up with action. Sad but true.
