Scotland: National Hearing Voices Network
Page last updated 21 June 2009
The Scottish Hearing Voices Network is planning to set up a national office to support the development of hearing voices groups throughout Scotland. They have written a draft proposal and would like to hear what voice hearers from Scotland think about their ideas. They would also be happy to hear from other people concerned with hearing voices too. Click on the title for more information on how you can get involved

I have a son of 36 diagnosed as 'schizophrenic, at present in Edinburgh Hospital under section and enforced medication (yet again). I am researching any possible 'alternatives' for him, as he has been trying for some years to not take chemical medication, but invariabley has ended up in hospital again - and now there are Care Treatment Orders - enforced medication once he leaves hospital. He is hoping to vist, and maybe enter Lothloriejn buddhist Therapeutic community, in Scotland, UK but medication will still be enforced even in this buddhist related community. I have found Ron Coleman, Rufuis May & Dirk Corstan, in Scotland, and will contact them now, but basically we are hoping to find some kind of experienced practioner in 'coming off psychiatric drugs' . Any information, help, links, contacts will be most welcome. Regards sue Calvo

Dear Sue, there is a great book on how to come off psychiatric drugs that I advise you and your son. It is called "Coming Off Psychiatric Drugs" and was edited by Peter Lehmann. It includes experience-reports of people who have taken psychopharmaka themselves and additional articles by all kinds of professionals who support withdrawing from them. You can find a link to Peter Lehmann's Publishing and Mail Order Bookstore, where you can order this book directly, on this website. Just go to the links section and click on "Organisations providing services". Hope this is of help for you! Regards, Caroline

'Hi I've been a voice hearer all my 55 years 'n I think it's real cool that there's now an Inetrvoice Scotland. I firmly believe voice hearing is an as yet un-understood natural phenomena - wrongly diagnosed and medicationally mistreated, this wrongful medication / misdiagnosis itself causing much of the distress, anxiety, paranoid schizophrenic symptoms associated with voice hearing. Thanks to all at HaVeN who have taken the time, energy, foresight, opportunity and understanding to bring Intervoice Scotland to the fore of mental health. It's about time something like this unfolded, many voice hearing sufferers haven't managed to survive to see it but for them the rest of us must keep on keeping on ... Sincerely Elizabeth Murray Brown c/o The Glengarry Centre Fort William
