De-Medicalising Misery

A one-day conference in honour of Professor Mary Boyle

University of East London – Docklands Campus

14th September 2007

De-medicalising Misery examines the effects of medicalised understandings of distressing human experience, and explores ways to counter them.

The conference brings together psychiatrists, clinical psychologists and service users at the forefront of this work to ask: how can we develop a better understanding of the social and cultural causes of distress? Are there more constructive ways to think about human suffering? Can we do without diagnosis? How good is the evidence for individualised therapeutic assistance? Can we find ways helping that do not implicitly accept medicalised explanations of misery?

The conference will be academically rigorous, yet also accessible to members of the public. While we expect many of the audience to be professionals, we actively encourage anyone with an interest in the future of mental health services to attend.

Confirmed speakers include: Prof. Richard Bentall, Dr. Pat Bracken, Peter Campbell, Dr. David Healy, Dr. Joanna Moncrieff, Prof. David Smail, Prof. Phil Thomas and Prof. Arlene Vetere.

Places are limited. For further information, and to book a place, please contact Prof. Mark Rapley via m.rapley@uel.ac.uk or on 07951 908409.
