Hearing voices and eating disorders

"Whenever you read about eating disorders or hear people talking about them, you usually hear about the eating disorder behaviors or the emotional issues causing them. It is not very often you hear people talk about the voices that go along with having an eating disorder. I feel it is very important to talk about those voices because they do play a big role in keeping the eating disorder active."

To Colleen, Mydaughter, age 37, refuses to eat. She is down to 85 pounds. She suffers from schitzophrenia and hear voices. What is the name of the disease that encompasses not eating because of hearing voices and what can be done about it?

Hi Shelley, Often we post articles written by other people. I do not know if Colleen will respond to your request. However there is a lot of interesting research being done on nutrition deficiencies and how the relation to hearing voices. Google Orthomolecular medicine , and you should see some interesting information on this. Main deficiencies seem to be zinc, vit B5, Vit D, Vit E. But is best to have someone tested, which many Doctors or Naturopaths can do. It would seem logical in a case where someone is not getting the correct dietary requirements that this could happen. IS she on neuroleptic medication? as we all know how this can make people very overweight. She may be refusing to eat as a boomerang effect of the excessive weight gain. I am not sure if I have been of help. All the best for you and your daughter. It may help to see if there is a hearing Voices Network locally that you can contact even if only by email. Or join our forum, where there are many who can answer your questions in more detail. regards Adrienne

My Mother has been on a diet for about 1 year. She is 76 years old and has lost 60 or 70 pounds. She has been hearing voices at night. She hears my brother talking and some things she says are not what my brother would say. She hears voices coming out of a phone hooked up to a computer and it continues every night and gets worse. She hears her neighbors talk through the walls and she can't hear me when I am in the same room with her. I am really worried and I have been looking up all the elderly disorders and came upon this and didn't realize it could be her eating. Does anyone know what I should do.
