The Deptford Hearing Voices Service (London)
Provides a service that enables the ‘voice hearer’ to speak with other ‘voice hearers’ or with the Project Worker. This form of contact can help people feel less alone and can also provide useful information about how to manage or cope with the ‘voices’. The service can also be used by people who care for ‘voice hearers’.
The Deptford Hearing Voices Services aims to encourage people who ‘hear voices’ to talk informally to the Project Worker to find out more their ‘voices’ before deciding whether or not they may want to discuss them further with their GP, other professional worker or with someone close to them.
The service offers, (i) three weekly support groups, two at the Compass Centre in Deptford (one of which is specifically for ‘voice hearers’) and one at the Northover Centre in Downham South Lewisham, all groups are also supported by user co-facilitators (ii) individual support with the Project Worker focusing on the ‘voices’ and how to cope with them, (iii) visits to the community centres and drop-ins and, (iv) an information and advice service for ‘voice hearers’, their carers and for voluntary and professional workers who may wish to find out more about ‘voices’ or the service.
The Project is funded by South London and Maudsley Mental Health NHS Trust or SLAM. It is based at Compass a Health and Social Services Day Centre. The Service is given professional support through the Clinical Psychology Department (Lewisham) of Mental Health Services.
