Dr Terence McLaughlin,

Hearing Voices Ireland
To promote and foster acceptance of voice hearing as a valid human experience

Hearing Voices Ireland is an initiative in setting up a network of self help groups around the country for people who hear voices and interested parties.

HVI had a launch event in Cork in November 2006 which gathered people from all over Ireland for a great start to setting up the network. The launch was entirely at their own initiative and expense.

The positive response from the launch demonstrated that there is a demand for hearing voices groups in Ireland. In particular, they are aware of people around the country who are interested in attending hearing voices support meetings on a regular basis. They are now seeking funding to establish five groups in the following cities – Dublin, Cork, Limerick, Galway and Waterford

They have produced a CD of voice hearers talking about their experiences which they want to distribute around the country so that people can learn about the hearing voices approach and how they can join a group. They also intend to publicise HVI through posters and leaflets.

There are currently 3 people in the south and 12 in the north trained as facilitators of self help groups. There are two facilitated groups running in Ireland now - one in Belfast and the other in Limerick. The plan is to expand, particularly in the south so we will have a network of self help groups in Ireland.
