The song is supposedly about a friend of Okereke (the lead singer and song writer) who hears voices.
Excerpt from song:
She's hearing voices call her
She's hearing voices warn her
She just can't sleep in her bed
She just can't sleep
She's falling down the stairs
She's tearing out her hair
She's screaming my name, in the night
To keep her warm
She got a red pill blue pill
Red pill blue pill
Red pill blue pill
Red pill blue pill
Milk of amnesia

Beach Boys (USA): I can hear music
"I Can Hear Music" is a song written by Jeff Barry, Ellie Greenwich and Phil Spector and performed by the Ronettes (1966). It was famously covered by the Beach Boys (1969)
Excerpt from song:
This is the way
I always dreamed it would be
The way that it is, oh oh
When you are holding me
I never had a love of my own
Maybe that's why when we're all alone
I can hear music
I can hear music
The sound of the city baby seems to disappear
I can hear music
Sweet sweet music
Whenever you touch me baby
Whenever you're near

She paints her eyes as black as night now
She pulls those shades down tight

Says they call her out by her name
Oh yeah, yeah, angels
Call her out by her name
Oh, angels
They call her out by her name
Oh, she talks to angels
They call her out
Yeah, they call her out
Dont you know that they call her out by her name

Ani DiFranco (USA):(suggested by Caroline) Swan Dive (1998)
Although much of DiFranco's material is autobiographical, it is often also strongly political. Many of her songs are concerned with contemporary social issues.
This song is about taking a chance and trying to succeed in life. It starts with someone depressed who wants to go out and do more, but it's hard. One in a million succeed, and she'll be labeled brilliant if she becomes a success. She goes on about how little she has in her life and climbs the railing in order to do her swan dive. She sees sharks (competitors) in the waters below but doesn't care, since she has nothing to lose. She has a vision of better things and she wants to go for it. She says she's going to prepare (vaccinations) for this journey and she's going to go boldly because a little bird (America?) told her it's easy. Next she paints a visual of diving into the sidewalk instead of a pool of water, which could signify how unlikely it is to achieve success.

Excerpt from song:
They can call me crazy if I fall
All the chance I need
Is one-in-a-million
And they can call me brilliant
If I succeed
Gravity is nothing to me
Im moving at the speed of sound
Im just gonna get my feet wet
Until I drown
I teeter between tired
And really, really tired
Im wiped out and Im wired
But I guess thats just as well
Cuz Ive built my own empire
Out of car tires and chicken wire
And now Im queen of my own compost heap
And Im getting used to the smell
Ive had a lack of information
Ive had a little revelation
Im climbing up on the railing
Trying not to look down
Im going to do my best swan dive
Into shark infested waters
Im going to pull out my tampon
And start splashing around
Cuz I dont care if they eat me alive
Ive got better things to do than survive
Ive got the memory of your warm skin in my hands
And Ive got a vision of blue sky and warm land
(...)
Im gonna go ahead and go boldly
Cuz a little bird told me
That jumping is easy
And falling is fun
Right up unitl you hit the sidewalk
Shivering and stunned
They can call me crazy if I fall
All the chance I need
Is one-in-a-million
And they cal call me brilliant
If I succeed
Gravity is nothing to me
Im moving at the speed of sound
Im just going to get my feet wet
Until I drown

The Eagles (USA): Hotel California (1977)
Regarded as a metaphor the song may be commenting on drug addiction or simply the decadent lifestyle the hugely successful band had been caught up in. Another theory is that the song is about a mental hospital or a federal prison. The expression "check out" is also considered a euphemism for suicide. Per the band itself, they have been on record saying the song is literally about a man who "drove into hell" and can't find a way out. Source: Wikipedia
Excerpt from song:
On a dark desert highway, cool wind in my hair
Warm smell of colitas, rising up through the air
Up ahead in the distance, I saw a shimmering light
My head grew heavy and my sight grew dim
I had to stop for the night
There she stood in the doorway;
I heard the mission bell
And I was thinking to myself,
’this could be heaven or this could be hell’
Then she lit up a candle and she showed me the way
There were voices down the corridor,
I thought I heard them say...
Welcome to the hotel california
Such a lovely place
Such a lovely face
Plenty of room at the hotel california
Any time of year, you can find it here

John Farnham (USA): You´re the Voice (1986)
an English-born Australian pop singer. Domestically he has remained one of Australia's best-known performers over a career spanning 40 years. Farnham took a break in the mid 1980´s and turned within, meditating on the spirit of the times, and listened to his quiet inner voice. The result was Australian rocks biggest selling album of all time Whispering Jack. It featured the hit song ´"You´re the Voice" about our ability to turn the pages over and write a new page of history. He asked us to find a peaceful resolution of our differences.
We have the chance to turn the pages over
We can write what we wanna write
We gotta make ends meet before we get much older
We're all someone's daughter
We're all someone's son
How long can we look at each other
Down the barrel of a gun?
Chorus:
You're the voice, try and understand it
Make a noise and make it clear
We're not gonna sit in silence
We're not gonna live with fear
This time, you know that we all can stand together
With the power to be powerful
Believing, we can make it better
We're all someone's daughter
We're all someone's son
How long can we look at each other
Down the barrel of a gun?
Chorus
Repeat
We're all someone's daughter
We're all someone's son
How long can we look at each other
Down the barrel of a gun?

Faithless (UK): Salva Mea (1995) suggested by Paul
Excerpt from song:
Dido :How can I change the world if I can't even change myself ?
I cannot change the way I am ?
I don't know, I don't know.
Maxi Jazz :
I wanna take a look at the world behind these eyes,
Every nook, every cranny reorganise,
Realise my face don't fit the way I feel.
What's real ?
I need a mirror to check my face is in place,
Incase of upheaval, fundamental movement below,
What's really going on I wanna know,
But yo, we don't show on the outside, so slide.
Just below my skin I'm screaming...
I need a mirror for my spirit,
Yeah, can you feel it ?
When I get deep, wanna hear myself sleep,
Not drowning, just tumbling around and around in the voices
Like a crowd in my head so loud,
I wonder what it's like to be dead,
I hope it's quiet, noise in my head like a riot,
Any remedy you have for me I'll try it.
Just below my skin I'm screaming...
I'm going deep, so deep that I can't sleep,
The pills ain't cheap but the bills are steep,
So I lick up with a booze and a spliff,
Try to snooze,
But who's dreaming, I ain't, this is win or loose,
Put down the drink, try not to think,
Let it go, fundamental movement below,
And yo, reality is dreaming,
Just below my skin I'm screaming...

Gnarls Barkley: (USA) Crazy (2006)
Excerpt from song:
I remember when, I remember, I remember when I lost my mind
There was something so pleasant about that place.
Even your emotions have an echo
In so much space
And when you're out there
Without care,
Yeah, I was out of touch
But it wasn't because I didn't know enough
I just knew too much
Does that make me crazy?
Does that make me crazy?
Does that make me crazy?
Probably

Don Henley: (USA) The boys of the summer (1985)
This is about looking back on a past relationship and wanting your ex back -- wanting to return to what you had. The first verse depicts how the writer is left behind. His ex has moved on but he hasn't and still hangs onto hope.
Excerpt from song:
Out on the road today I saw a deadhead sticker
On a cadillac
A little voice inside my head said, dont
Look back. you can never look back.
I thought I knew what love was,
What did I know?
Those days are gone forever
I should just let them go but-
I can see you-
Your brown skin shinin in the sun

James (UK) (Suggested by Caroline): Sit Down (1989)
"Sit Down" is one of the most famous tracks by James, released in 1989 by Rough Trade Records. The songs lyrics were written as a thank you to two women who greatly inspired the wrier, Tim Booth - author Doris Lessing and singer Patti Smith.
Excerpt from song:
I’ll sing myself to sleep
A song from the darkest hour
Secrets I can’t keep
Inside of the day
Swing from high to deep
Extremes of sweet and sour
Hope that God exists
I hope I pray
Drawn by the undertow
My life is out of control
I believe this wave will bear my weight
So let it flow
Oh sit down
Oh sit down
Oh sit down
Sit down next to me
Sit down, sit down, sit down, sit down, down
In sympathy
Now I’m relieved to hear
That you’ve been to some far out places
It’s hard to carry on
When you feel all alone
Now I’ve swung back down again
It’s worse than it was before
If I hadn’t seen such riches
I could live with being poor
Oh sit down
Oh sit down
Oh sit down
Sit down next to me
Sit down, sit down, sit down, sit down, down
In sympathy
Those who feel the breath of sadness
Sit down next to me
Those who find they’re touched by madness
Sit down next to me
Those who find themselves ridiculous
Sit down next to me

James (UK) (Suggested by Paul): Blue Pastures (1997)
Track 11, Whiplash; Mercury Records
"I wrote one lyric about a guy going to commit suicide by going on his favorite walk and lying down in the snow and allowing himself to die. You read any lyricist, like the Beatles or whatever, they say they didn't write their lyrics. The whole muse thing in Greek mythology, that's a myth with a power behind it, and the power behind it is because there's a truth in it." Tim Booth, lyricist and lead singer
Excerpt from song:
Blue Pastures
Blue pastures fade away
Green rivers in silver light
I’m walking to the sound of distant bells
So peaceful I don’t know who I am
And just when I think its clear it turns so grey again
And I wonder who will find me in the snow
And just when I thought I was free I got pulled in again
Once you’re in, you’re in
Blue pastures calling home
I’m walking, but I can’t stand any more
Hear voices can’t tell near or far
Wierd voices lay me down
And I don’t see why I’m obliged to just carry on
When everything I touch turns out wrong
And I feel I have committed some crime but I don’t know what I’ve done
One day life just wins
Still breathing, but I’m tired and I want to go home
Still breathing but I’m not sure any more
Still breathing but it really doesn’t matter if I fade away
Fall into a sleep
Fall into the deep

Jimi Hendrix (USA) And the wind cries Mary (1967)
The song is said to have been inspired when Hendrix and his then girlfriend had an argument; after she stormed out of their apartment.
Excerpt from song:
After all the jacks are in their boxes
And the clowns have all gone to bed
You can hear happiness staggering on down the street
Footsteps dressed in red
And the wind whispers mary
A broom is drearily sweeping
Up the broken pieces of yesterdays life
Somewhere a queen is weeping
Somewhere a king has no wife
And the wind, it cries mary

Mary Maddocks (Ireland): Voices (2007)
This song was especially written to acknowledge and celebrate the experience of people who hear voices.
Lyrics of song:
We, We are abused nowYou don´t seem to understand
Modern day scapegoats
Hidden away, not on your land
We, we hear voices
You don´t understand
We, We hear voices
Stretch out your hand and understand
Our voices they have meaning
You don´t understand
Our voices they have meaning
Give us your hand and understand
Come on, Let us be now
Don't just throw away the key
Come on, let us be now
Let us be, let us be, let us be
We, we don´t need your labels
They only discriminate
Give us your love, your understanding
Then we can live our lives and celebrate.

Don McLean (USA): Vincent (1971)
Written as a tribute to Vincent Van Gogh. It is also known by its opening line, "Starry Starry Night", a reference to Van Gogh's painting Starry Night. The song describes a different painting by Van Gogh in each of its stanzas.
Excerpt from song:
Starry
starry night
paint your palette blue and grey
look out on a summer's day
with eyes that know the
darkness in my soul.
Shadows on the hills
sketch the trees and the daffodils
catch the breeze and the winter chills
in colors on the snowy linen land.
And now I understand what you tried to say to me
how you suffered for your sanity
how you tried to set them free.
They would not listen
they did not know how
perhaps they'll listen now.

Tom Petty (USA): Refuge (1979)
Petty: "This was a reaction to the pressures of the music business. I wound up in a huge row with the record company .... I was so angry with the whole system that I think that had a lot to do with the tone.
Excerpt from song:
Right now this seems real to you
But it's one of those things
You gotta feel to be true
Somewhere, somehow somebody
Must have kicked you around some
Who knows, maybe you were kidnapped
Tied up, taken away and held for ransom
It don't really matter to me
Everybody's had to fight to be free
You see you don't have to live like a refugee
I said you don't have to live like a refugee

Pink Floyd (USA): Wish you were here (1975)
The song's lyrics encompass writer Roger Waters's feelings of alienation from other people and himself, as well as disillusionment with music. Like most of the album, it also refers to former Pink Floyd member Syd Barrett. Roger Keith "Syd" Barrett (6 January 1946 – 7 July 2006) was an English singer, songwriter, guitarist, and artist. He is best remembered as being one of the founding members of Pink Floyd. Barrett was active as a rock musician for about seven years before he went into seclusion.
Excerpt from song:
So, so you think you can tell Heaven from Hell,
blue skies from pain.
Can you tell a green field from a cold steel rail? A smile from a veil?
Do you think you can tell?
And did they get you trade your heroes for ghosts?
Hot ashes for trees? Hot air for a cool breeze?
Cold comfort for change? And did you exchange
a walk on part in the war for a lead role in a cage?
How I wish, how I wish you were here.
We're just two lost souls swimming in a fish bowl,
year after year,
running over the same old ground. What have we found?
The same old fears,
wish you were here.

Regina Spektor: Fidelity (2006)
A Russian-born American singer-songwriter and pianist. Her music is associated with the anti-folk scene centered on New York City's East Village.
Excerpt from song:
I never loved nobody fully
Always one foot on the ground
And by protecting my heart truly
I got lost in the sounds
I hear in my mind
All these voices
I hear in my mind all these words
I hear in my mind all this music
And it breaks my heart
And it breaks my heart
And it breaks my heart
It breaks my heart

Simon and Garfunkle (USA): Sounds of silence (1964)
"The Sound of Silence" is the song that propelled the 1960s folk music duo Simon and Garfunkel to popularity. It was written by Paul Simon in the aftermath of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy on November 22, 1963. Simon conceived of the song as a way of capturing the emotional trauma felt by many Americans left by the sudden death of a vigorous and visionary leader.
Excerpt from song:
Hello darkness, my old friend
I've come to talk with you again
Because a vision softly creeping
Left its seeds while I was sleeping
And the vision that was planted in my brain
Still remains
Within the sound of silence

James Taylor (USA): Fire and Rain (1970)
This song is supposed to be about the high and low points of Taylor's life. He was only 20 when he wrote this, but was battling depression and drug addiction.
Excerpt from song:
Oh, I've seen fire and I've seen rain
I've seen sunny days that I thought would never end
I've seen lonely times when I could not find a friend
But I always thought that I'd see you again
Been walking my mind to an easy time my back turned towards the sun
Lord knows when the cold wind blows it'll turn your head around
Well, there's hours of time on the telephone line to talk about things
to come
Sweet dreams and flying machines in pieces on the ground

Billy Bob Thornton (USA): Private Radio (2001) (suggested by Jonathan)
Oscar-winning actor/director/writer/musician Billy Bob Thornton was raised in Arkansas by his high school basketball coach father and psychic mother. After hitting it big in Hollywood, Thornton decided to return to his first love, music, and record an album. The dark and personal Private Radio arrived in 2001. Thornton has stated on several occasions that he has obsessive-compulsive disorder; he and rock singer Warren Zevon became close friends after sharing their common experiences with the disorder. He is known for various idiosyncratic behaviors, well-documented in interviews with the actor.
There are voices in my head / and demons in my soul / Sometimes they keep me warm / sometimes they leave me cold
There are strangers in my bed / to caress my jaded skin / And squeeze my body tight / and forgive me of my sins
And I know I am not Insane / if I am I 'm not to blame / It is just this damned old hungry pain / Like a drug inside my veins
And I' ve sown just what I' ve reaped / And my thoughts are mine to keep / And through my chilly bones they creep / And they whisper me to sleep
When the nighttime goes away / and the voices have all gone / I fumble with my clothes / and put myself back on
I walk out on the street to face another day / I know I 'll meet my fears somewhere along the way / As i climb the mighty steel and watch the river flow / i'll drown beneath the waves of my own private radio.
